About speech therapy

Speech therapy is a form of medical rehabilitation aimed at assessing, treating, and preventing speech, language, and interaction disorders. The primary goal is to enhance the client's communication and functional abilities in everyday life, ultimately improving their quality of life. In Finland, only licensed speech therapists are authorized to provide speech therapy services.

For children, speech therapy often involves playful activities, games, and enjoyable interaction to develop new skills. Working together with the client’s close network—such as family or educators—is a key part of the process, ensuring that progress made in therapy can be supported and applied in daily routines.

Therapy goals are always set together with the client and their close ones at the beginning of the therapy process, ensuring the therapy is tailored to individual needs.

How to Access Speech Therapy?

You can access speech therapy either through the public healthcare system or by booking an appointment directly with a private speech therapist as a self-paying client.

In the public system, a referral from your local child health clinic (neuvola in Finnish) or school healthcare provider is typically required for an initial speech therapy assessment. If you have any concerns about your child’s speech or language development, don’t hesitate to contact your local healthcare provider. Speech therapy assessments are usually conducted through public healthcare services.

If the assessment shows that a child requires regular and intensive speech therapy, rehabilitation may be funded by Kela (The Social Insurance Institution of Finland). To qualify for Kela-funded speech therapy, a rehabilitation plan and recommendation from a public healthcare physician are required. Once the application for speech therapy is submitted to Kela, they decide whether the therapy will be approved. Kela’s decision will specify the approved number and duration of the speech therapy sessions, as well as the therapy location. Speech therapy is usually carried out at home, in daycare, or at school. Therapy can begin once the official approval from Kela has been received.
